Spiritual Growth Resources

There are many different avenues that we can direct you to for healthy spiritual growth. But here we want to help direct your paths to the single most beneficial spiritual growth resource and that resource is the divine Word of God. I Timothy 3: 16-17 states that “All Scripture is give by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine (teaching), for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." That means that the Word of God is profitable and sufficient for every area in your walk of life. We want to provide a few simple, yet valuable tips to help improve your study and devotion to God's Word.

BASICS TO STUDYING THE BIBLE

1. Reading
It's obvious that if you want to know what any book says, your best bet is to read it. You can listen to someone else teach it to you or tell you about it, but for the surest knowledge of the book, reading it for yourself is the most beneficial.
Develop a plan on how you will approach reading through the Bible. Unlike most books, you will probably not read it straight through from cover to cover. There are many good Bible reading plans available. A few places you might find a good Bible reading plan are:  in the back of your Bible, any good Christian bookstore, online at crosswalk.com, and of course your local church--Heatherridge Baptist.

2. Study
Reading the Bible is a crucial first step, and you will learn much from doing it. We must not stop there, however. We need to dig beneath the surface of Scripture by doing serious Bible study. For example, study a Bible topic. Study the prayers of the Bible. You could study forgiveness, judgment, or any other  topic. A topical Bible would be of help in this area and again, you can get one of those at any Christian bookstore.
Another way of study is to outline. Read the book or chapter through many times and then go through and outline it and study each section of the outline. Look for the key truths it is teaching. When you discover them, write them down, along with questions. Try to learn as much as you can from the passage itself before you turn to outside sources.
As you read and study the Bible, always ask yourself: “How does God's truth penetrate and change my own life?" Studying Scripture without allowing it to penetrate the depths of your soul would be like preparing a banquet without eating it. The bottom-line question to ask is: “How do the divine truths and principles contained in any passage apply to me in terms of my attitude and actions?" Jesus made a promise to those who carry their study through to this point: “If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them." John 13:17

3. Teach the Bible
Don't keep what you've learned to yourself. Find someone else and share what you've learned. Find a family member, a friend, or maybe a co-worker. Don't hesitate to share what you've learned and about your relationship with Christ.

4. Be Accountable
Find someone who will hold you accountable to study the Bible, especially if you don't teach the Bible on a regular basis.

5. Hear the Word Taught
Be faithful to your local church. Make sure it is a church where the Word is honored and taught as it should be. Please feel invited to check out our services where the Word of God is given first priority. It's not enough to just read and study the Scriptures. Be sure to spend a good amount of time before and after praying and meditating on the Scriptures. The Bible is central to the Christian life. It is God's infallible, inerrant, complete, authoritative, and sufficient Word to us. It is our source of truth, happiness, victory, growth, power, and guidance. It is an absolutely essential key to spiritual growth.
If you have any questions or need help growing in your spiritual life, first and foremost, make sure you are active in church, and also feel free to contact our church office and speak with one of our pastors. We would love to help you on your spiritual journey!
